Plans for first US memorial for lynching victims to open in Alabama
A civil rights organization based in Alabama will build a monument in the state’s capital to honor victims of lynchings, in what is believed to be the first-such memorial. The Equal Justice Initiative will also build a museum focused on African-American history. Both venues are expected to open in 2017.
The memorial will be the first in the US to pay recognize the countless lynching victims. The monument will feature a series of columns, each representing a county where lynchings took place, according to the Equal Justice Initiative. The names of the victims will be engraved on these columns.
